Poster Submission: FRACTURED
Folie Design:
Since 1824, the Brisbane River has been the foundations of the growing city. Particular infrastructure, such as the Howard Smith Wharves have been a crucial development for Brisbane. However like many other developments within the city the wharves have expanded closer and closer to the river’s edge, impacting on the river’s eco system. The river was a vital food source for many animals and eco systems; however the development of the city has left the river in poor condition and will continue too as the city continues to grow.
This Ecosystem needs to be able to breathe and hopefully regenerate. My proposal is to make people aware of these ongoing issues and solutions to these issues. The obvious shape and design of the folie is to symbolise the concept of the river being suffocated by the surrounding infrastructure. The function of the folie is a system of human powered generators, to charge mobile phones, televisions, laptops and many other technologies. This will allow people to enjoy the river while working on their laptops or powering their mobiles, without adding more emissions into the eco system. The public will also become more aware of the amount of energy needed to power up these technologies with this system.
The overall structure of the proposed folie is made from EcoSmart concrete which is more sustainable than standard concrete. This material reduces the green house gas emissions associated with the production of concrete; saves natural resources; costs less; the life cycle is longer and it has increased durability.
